“I’m here, Sheldon. I’m not going anywhere. All the bullshit from before, it’s all gone. It’s just you now.”
I held my breath. Hearing that sent so many different sensations through me. Relief. Then anger. Then happiness. Catching movement from the corner of my eye, I turned and sadness centered smack dab in the middle of my chest.
Corrigan was standing in the doorway. He had overheard.
Bryce saw him too. “Hey, man.”
Corrigan’s eyes were still on me. There was no reaction. Nothing gave way, he had a cold mask over his features, then a nerve clenched from his jaw and he turned to leave.
A feeling of shame replaced the sadness in my chest, but I didn’t go after him. I didn’t deserve to go after him and at that thought, I swung back to Bryce. “We get one thing straight. He is a better person than both of us.”
Bryce’s shoulders lifted in a silent breath. He clipped his head in a nod and said, “I’m not disagreeing with you.”
“Whatever happens, whatever shit storm comes our way, he’s the one who deserves to live. Before us, it’s him.”
He didn’t comment at first, then he sighed. “You’re asking me to put my best friend that fell in love with the woman that I love, to put him above you? I can’t do that, Sheldon. It’s you first for me, always will be.”
I opened my mouth, a protest at the tip of my tongue, but he waved a hand and cut me off. A haunted look entered his gaze as he added, “But I’ll put him above me because unlike myself, he’s never hurt you and that’s one thing I will always be in his debt. He’s always taken care of you.”
Usually me before I realize I'm about to see a hurtful comment about me somewhere on the internet, because seriously--some of them sting.
For a moment, I just stare at it.
Then I feel a little of this.
And then, because apparently I'm just fascinated at having my feelings hurt, I go back to see if it's still there. Because, you know, it could've disappeared in those five seconds from the first time I saw it.
Yep. It's still there. Then this reaction happens inside of me and it makes no sense.
No sense like I said, but then I try to tell myself some of this.
Which never works.
